Veluka School in Randberg used to be reserved for Sunday school, but now with over 70 students it runs as a full-time centre of learning for children from local townships and orphanages.
After some inspirational people saw how South Africa’s education system was failing in key areas – particularly maths, reading and writing – they knew it was time for a change. We are very excited to have partnered with Core, our South African distributor, and iSchool Africa to sponsor iPads in schools and help children to independently engage with their learning.
knomo’s mission is to help individuals lead inspired lives; access to new technologies gives both pupils and teachers just this. There is particular focus on special needs children, with the aim of entering them into a trade college and eventually enter into society.
This is proving to be a real game-changer and the scheme has expanded to a second location – Vukanibantu School in Port Elizabeth, the home town of one of our founders – the pictures beneath are from Mrs Ntsumpa’s English class!
One student said “The Apps Erna downloaded for us are simply fantastic and the learners find reading the stories like “The Cat in the Hat” much more exciting than they would in a regular book.” As well as building confidence, specially created numeracy and literacy Apps mean that the quality of learning has improved dramatically.
We also sent Folio cases to see that each iPad will last for years to come! The team at knomo are very proud to be involved in this inspiring and meaningful programme, and look forward to many more updates from the team working in South Africa.
